A Wellington mourning brooch for sale. The gilt metal mourning brooch depicting a portrait of The Duke of Wellington, hand painted on ivory base (circa 1850s).  The brooch with convex glass to the fore, the reverse with horizontal fastener.

The portrait shows The Duke of Wellington in his later years, wearing a scarlet coatee  and garter insignia. The portrait being good quality. English school.

Condition report: overall very good to excellent condition. Some gilt loss to the brooch, now with a good patination. The portrait free from damage.

Provenance: The Wellington mourning brooch  in the present family since 1900, thereabouts. and possibly commissioned by/for a family member in the 1800s.  The sale includes a letter from the family, confirming the chronology to 1900,thereabouts.
