Waterloo Medal. Charge of The Union Brigade. 6th Inniskilling Dragoons.
A Waterloo Medal for sale to James Toner, 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. The Waterloo Medal in close to mint condition, with original steel clip and ring suspension. The Waterloo Medal is free from any edge knocks, close to perfect rim, and clear impressed naming and details. The medal has a replacement ribbon and silver Victorian buckle.
The Waterloo Medal sale includes discharge papers sourced from the National Archive, plus a framed medal mount and illustration, (commissioned by the previous custodian), detailing the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons preparing to charge the French cavalry. The medal sits to the centre of the mount, housed in a wood and brass frame.
Note: the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons (Irish), together with the Scots Greys (Scottish) and the Royal Dragoons (English), formed the Union Brigade, and made the infamous 'charge,' shattering the advancing French columns at The Battle of Waterloo.
Turning the battle in favour of an Allied victory was not without significant loss: the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons was reduced by 55%: a total of 217 officers and men (killed and wounded).
Born in Inniskilling, James Toner enlisted with the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons on January 12, 1797. He was 18. Toner served with the regiment at the Battle of Waterloo. Records indicate he was later discharged to pension, (June 4th, 1817).
