Excellent quality portrait miniature on ivory circa 1810. The sitter, a young officer from the 42nd Highland Regiment wearing regimental scarlet coatee with blue facings, along with 'GR' gorget.

The officer's gold regimental cross plate shows the regimental number '42.' It is highly probable the sitter asked for his regimental number to be painted clearly. Framed in a classic, plain gilt Georgian mount, with a very nice quality cut beveled glass to the front. The reverse has an outer surround in translucent blue enamel over an engine turned base (beautifully restored) and a centre oval with fine hair back interwoven with gold wheat sheaves.

Condition report: Clean and sharp watercolour on ivory. Free from damage. Clean and scratch free glass. Blue enamel to reverse with some restoration (well done). Gilted frame clean and without dents.
