Napoleonic Trafalgar Period Sword

Stunning 1805 Pattern sword By Hamburger & Co.

Napoleonic, Royal Navy sword for sale. The 1805 pattern, Napoleonic sword, made  by Hamburger & Co., Covent Garden, London. The sword with typical pre-1820s strirrup hilt, with upper rectangular hole for the portepee, and  pleasing continuation of stirrup design into the main hilt assembly.

The lower langets beautifully engraved with the fouled anchor design. The entire hilt assembly with mercuric gilt plating. The grip, made from light grey shagreen, and bearing golden wire wrapping. The blade, by Runkel, Solingen, with engraved decorative scrolls, post-1801 arms, and crown 'GR'. cypher. The leather buffer-pad in place. The scabbard in dark brown/black leather, and with three mercuric gilted brass decorative mounts; the upper two with suspension rings. The top mount finely hand engraved with the rectangular sword makers's cartouche, 'Hamburger & Co, King Street, Covent Garden, London.'

Condition report: The hilt assembly with much mercuric gilt finish remaining.  The grey shagreen grip free from unsightly chips or damage. The wires intact by slightly loose. The blade in a bright grey state, but free from any bad pitting or damages. The original engraving work still present and easily visible. some gilt finishing to the engraving remaining.

The scabbard leather  in a good state, and retaining shape with the blade withdrawn. The scabbard mounts with most mercuric gilt finish, particularly where the langets protect the upper mount.

Note: Swordsmiths, Hamburger & Co. were based in King Street, Covent Garden from 1812 to 1826. This particular Napoleonic sword is made with a  Runkel blade, therefore it would appear Hamburger & Co., either inherited, or purchased a quantity of  Runkel blades (blade-makers, Runkel, Solingen, ceased trading from 1808).

Undoubtedly, this 1805 pattern, Napoleonic sword would have been made during the first couple of years Hamburger & Co. operated from the King Street premises, London.
