RAF Omega watch for sale manufactured in 1953. The RAF watch  often referred to as the RAF Omega Fat Arrow on account of the comparatively broader, War Department arrow to the dial. 

The Omega watch with large stainless steel, turned case (47.0 mm x 37.0 mm excluding crown), and contract, screw case-back. Typical black dial with the Omega trade-name, trademark cartouche, and  circled (Tritium) 'T.' 

The War Department arrow  above the 18.00hrs. The black dial with 1-12 hour digits, with luminous hour-marks. Typical large white, centre-sweep seconds hand as used by the RAF.   

To the reverse, case-back with markings, War Department arrow, '6645 101000,' '6B/542, serial number, '1115,' and '53' date-code. 

The inside to the case-back with Omega name and case number. Inner movement protector can be removed to reveal the fine quality 17-jewel movement with copper main bridges. The balance with screw-in weights. The Omega watch maker-name to the main Bridge. The watch has a recent brown leather strap fitted.

Condition report: Just light use to the case. plexi-glass clear and free from adverse scratching. Dial excellent and original. Hands excellent and with original paint finish. Case-back clean and free from adverse scratches or damage. Overall condition above average. Movement particularly clean and functioning. Recently serviced and offered for sale with a six months warranty.

Notes: This example bearing the serial number '1115', is one of the lowest known numbers to become available on the market place. The earliest number shown in Knirim's publication, British Military Timepieces is '1132'. 

General notes on Omega 53 'Fat Arrow' watches: This 1953 Omega was part of a one year order from the British Royal Air Force to Omega. The watch was produced in limited quantities. Exactly how many is debated, some sources state 5,900, however, Knirim shows an example in his publication British Military Timepieces, with a serial number of '10 549'. The watch was produced for wear by operational pilots. The watch was both antimagnetic and every example was chronometer certified. The watch is cased in soft iron to prevent magnetism from the aircraft instruments that may have affected its performance during military operations. The Omega 53 was originally produced with a so-called  'Thin Arrow' Radium dial, but the MOD belived they could be radioactive. As such they fitted replaced dials to their stock-piled watches, replacing the Radium with Tritium. These MOD dials have a circled letter 'T' under the Omega name. The War Department arrow is thicker than the original version, hence the collectors nick-name, 'Fat Arrow'.
