To the centre, the impressed Marine National, 'MN' designation, and serial number '2646'. The inside with fine quality movement, and balance with bearing screwed weights. The movement number suggesting a  post- 1940s, manufacture date.

Condition report: Case in excellent condition, and with a clean original black dial still retaining all the luminous numbers. The movement in good clean condition, and in running order. No warranty implied.

Note: With the outbreak of WW2, the French navy became divided: sailors loyal to the cause of the Free French, gave their ships over to -  and fought with- the allies: the majority however sided with Germany, and were commited to fighting the British and Americans.

In 1940 the allies mounted 'Operation Catapult,' with the objective of forcing the French navy into submission to allied demands. The operation led to the sinking of a French battleship. Additonally,1297 French sailors were killed, and two battleships, plus four destroyers were knocked-out. The majority of the French navy continued to fight the allies until the end of the war.
