Fresh to-the-market, four clasps, impeccable provenance, NEF condition



A Military General Service Medal for sale for with four clasps and impeccable provenance.The medal for sale for the first time.

The MGS medal clasps grouped into two sets: Vittoria, Pyrennes, Orthes and Toulouse. The naming to the MGS medal reads 'J. McKINLEY,CORPL, ARTY. DRIVER' complete with ribbon.

Condition report: Overall excellent (NEF) condition, with all detail clear, including naming (fault at 'K' see additional note). Suspension perfect and the four medal clasps in good order free from damage or loose rivets. Original silk ribbon dating to issue (1848). The medal uncleaned, and with patina.

Provenance: The MGS Medal for sale on consignment and the property of the Vendor's family from 1848 to date.  Provenance document included with the medal sale.

Note 1: The name James McKinley was used for successive generations.  In this description to ensure clear representation, the Military General Service Medal for sale was awarded to James McKinley (Senior). His grandson (also James),  is referred to as McKinley (Junior).

Family History | The Medal in Context 

1.   The Military General Service Medal was awarded to Corporal James McKinley [Senior]. Dates unknown.

2.  Corporal James McKinley [Senior] was the grandfather of James McKinley, [Junior].

3.  James McKinley [Junior] was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland [1818] and died in Carlton, Victoria, Australia [1868].

4.   1850s James McKinley [Junior] and his wife emigrated  from Northern Ireland to Australia.

5.  1871, James McKinley’s [Junior] daughter, Mary Jane McKinley (1846-1930), married George Wilson (1848-1930).

6. The Wilson’s fifth child Victor George Wilson (1881-1955) married Clara Mann.

7. 1881 onwards. Thr Surname ‘McKinley’ was used as a forename.

8. George & Clara Mann had two sons, George William McKinley Wilson (1915-1962), and Charles Victor Wilson (1919-1986).

Note 2: The medal with a fault to the impressed letter 'K.'

Note 3: The Vendor believes  [1] the medal was awarded with ‘C’ lettering error and [2] further to receiving the medal the recipient James McKinley [Senior] made attempts to amend the letter 'C' to 'K.'

Naming errors (and efforts to amend), were commonplace at the time.
