1794. Capture of The Castor. Jenkins' Naval Achievements. Aquatint 1817

May 29th 1793. Capture of The Castor  An original aquatint from Jenkins' Naval Achievements published in 1817. Engraved by Sutherland and hand-coloured by Whitcombe, this aquatint was first published on 1st April 1816 (although a clasp 'Carysfort 29 May 1794' was agreed for the Naval General Service Medal none were claimed or awarded. The recapture of the HMS Castor occured off Newfoundland by Carysport. The Castor had been captured by the French on 10th May also off Newfoundland.

In total 55 engravings,  beautifully hand-coloured by Whitcombe, of each major Napoleonic naval battle, were bound into Jenkins' Naval Achievements. The completed volume, first published in 1817 only sold in minute numbers. Today, complete volumes can fetch over £10,000, and single plates are highly coveted by collectors. Size with borders: 33cm x 28cm (full size as removed from the original volume).

Note: Roger Quarm, curator of pictures at the National Maritime Museum stated "As a record of naval events spanning a period of over twenty years Jenkins' Naval Achievements has no precedent. At no time prior to 1817 had a publisher attempted such a complete volume of documentary naval prints. It is the quality of accuracy which makes Jenkins so valuable".

Condition report: Quality of the colouring excellent, colouring unfaded & bright. Never previously framed and still complete with extra border where pulled from the original volume.

Provenance: A complete 1817 Naval Achievements  volume was acquired from Christie's auction house in 1989. The volume had badly damaged covers, and four of the original plates missing. The covers were discarded and the plates held in a folio until consigned to ULRIC of ENGLAND in 2013.
