The Reinhard Heydrich Biography. Volume 2 'Enigma'

A first-class work of historical investigation
Roger Bender, Bender Publishing, U.S.A.
The Reinhard Heydrich Biography, Volume 1 & 2

'Reinhard Heydrich's assassination had a profound effect on the SS and the National Socialist State...an unlikely outcome for the son of a middle class family: Heydrich's father Bruno was a consummate musician and Director of the prestigous Halle Conservetoire, his mother, Elisabeth, a practising Catholic, dedicated to family life.'

The second volume in this two-volume study, explores Reinhard Heydrich's life from the beginning of WW2,through to his involvement in the 'Jewish question' and position as acting ’Reichsprotector’ for Bohemia-Moravia. Heydrich’s assassination, including his state funeral, the social and  political  impact of his death,  memorial proposals, and the responsibilities imposed on his widowed, pregnant wife Lina are also detailed.

Chapter snap-shots:

Heydrich's War

'Hitler had always favoured a staged outrage as an excuse for attack, and considered the assassination of von Papen, his Ambasador in Vienna as a pretext for Anschluss... Heydrich's plan was to deploy SD units (disguised as Polish soldiers),to attack selected border installations the night before the German onslaught...code name 'Operation Himmler.'

The Jewish Question

'Heydrich had always been 'credited' with the events of this night, but documents point to Goebbels and his desire to play a prominent role in the Reich's policy towards the Jews.'

The Wansee Conference & Minoux Villa

'July 30 1939. Heydrich established the Foundation Nordhav. His objective - to create and maintain 'holiday homes' for the SS Security Service and thier immediate families. The foundation was named after a farm located on the the Baltic island of Fehmarn. It may have been a decoy for other financial activities.'

Reichsprotektor

'The geographical position of Prague on the map of Europe dictated its strategic military significance. Furthermore, the Czech motor and arms industries were significant to the German war effort.'

Anthropoid

'The target would be either 'newcomer Karl Hermann Frank or the influential Heydrich...Moravec's first task was to recruit an assassination team. Locksmith and  'career soldier' Josef Gabcik, served in the French Foreign Legion, and was highly decorated for his actions in The Battle of The Marne, (The War Cross and Croix de Guerrre).'

The Martyrs of Prague

'News of Heydrich's assassintation was passed to the Gestapo by the Czech liasion officer,  Zenaty...a criminal investigation followed. Karl Hermann Franks' objective however was to impress Hitler, and qualify for Heydrich's position.'

'Meine Ehre Heissst Treue'

'Kurt Daluege, Heydrich's replacement in the Protectorate delivered a memorial speech, followed by the music of the SS Treuelied. Himmler reserved his main eulogy for  Heydrichs' State Funeral in Berlin.'

Aftermath

'In addition to Hitler's highest accolade... Heydrich was posthumously awarded the Wound Badge in Gold,War Service Cross 1st Class (with swords). He was also the last recipient of the Blood Order,(Qualification No.3)...The 6th SS Infantry Standarte was conferred the honour title 'Reinhard Heydrich.'

In the months following Heydrich's assassination, proposals for a memorial were discussed  between Himmler, Lina Heydrich, Wolff, Bormann, and the landscape architect Konig.'
