Royal Flying Corps, cockpit watch for sale. The WWI, MK.V watch made by Omega, Switzerland, and used by the Royal Flying Corps between 1916-18.
The Royal Flying Corps watch with a solid nickel-silver case. The dial in black enamel with 1 - 12-hour digits and subsidiary seconds. Dial marked: 'B.B.1696 30 Hour, Non Luminous, Mk. V.' Press-fit case-back and hinged inner dust-cover. Nickel bow (later addition enabling the watch to be worn). Inside case-back impressed with case number. Hinged polished inner dust-cover engraved with the Omega trademark, and name.
High quality, silvered bridges, 19 ligne, 15-jewel movement. Signed Omega. Bi-metallic compensation balance. Breguet over-coil hair spring. British military markings to the case-back include War Department arrow and letter 'A' (Aviation). Diameter 52.0 mm. The original owner's name and address engraved to the inside of the case-back.
Condition report: Case in excellent condition, free from dents or other damage. The dial in excellent condition. Silvered hands clean. Glass with light scratchesoverall (one deeper at the 7.0 position). Movement clean and fresh-looking, with perfect silvered finish remaining. The Royal Flying Corps Omega watch is for sale in running condition. No warranty implied.
Note: Royal Flying Corps pilots were responsible for the safe-keeping of cockpit watches. Pilots 'signed for' - and were duty-bound to return the cockpit watch following a mission. The RFC employed numerous methods to mount cockpit watches to aircraft dashboards.
