Major David McCowan 8th Scottish Rifles


Fine scarlet Lord Lieutenants uniform, originally belonging to Major David McCowan of the 8th Scottish Rifles. McCowan became Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Glagow in 1920.


Highest quality scarlet red melton material with dark blue facings, and with heavy silver brocade lace throughout. The uniform with heavy silvered buttons throghout, each with the King's crown amidst laurel leaves. The interior tailored in white silk, and with the tailor's name panel, Henry Poole & Sons, Saville Row, London, to the inside centre back. Within the inside pocket is the corresponding Poole tailors panel with the date 1920 inked in, along with McCowan's name.

Additionally the uniform has the fine brocade belt with thistle buckle, and cross strap.

Condition report: The uniform surviving in overall excellent condition. The scarlet material still fresh, and free from moth or other damage. The lining is complete but there is some general wear showing through, and some inevitable breakdown of the silk in places. The uniform is complete with all its heavy silvered buttons with have a pleasant aged appearance. The belt, buckle, and cross strap remains in overall excellent condition with just light aging to the brocade work.

Notes: David McCowan became a Major in the 8th Scottish Rifles during W.W.1. In 1920 he became Duputy Lieutenant of Glasgow, and later was give the title of 1st Baronet McCowan of Dalwhat, Co.Dumfries in 1934. McCowan died in 1937 at the age of 76.

Provenance: Acquired for the Australian-based Riemers Collection during the 1980s. Remaining in that collection until consigned to ULRIC of ENGLAND.
