Background to Genral Theodor Petsch: Theodor Victor Leo Petsch was born in Berlin on June 27, 1884. He entered military service on September 12, 1903 as a Fahnenjunker. He was assigned to 5th West Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 148 . Once in military service, Petsch began a rapid career. By the end of the First World War, he had risen to the rank of captain, and then continued in service with the Reichswehr. At the beginning of World War II, Petsch held the rank of colonel  and was commander of Infantry Regiment 353 during the Western Front. On May 3, 1941, Petsch became commander of the 710th Infantry Division, with a promotion to the rank of General. From 1941 through to 1944, he was stationed with this unit in Norway. From summer 1944 he returned to Germany, and was stationed in Kassel. On March 1, 1945, Petsch was promoted to General of the Infantry. From 9 December 1944 to March 1945 Petsch commanded the IX. Army Corps and Military District IX in Kassel. But after only a few months, in March 1945, Petsch was transferred to the so-called leader reserve. In May 1945, he surrendered himself into US captivity , from which he was released in 1947. Petsch died from natural causes on  June 22 1973.
