An important document signed by Concentration Camp chief, Oswald Pohl, concerning Dr Werner Heyde, head of the euthanasia program.

SS General Oswald Pohl signature. 'Der Chef Der SS-Hauptamts' headed paper. Document dated 25 Juni 1936. Typed document relating to SS-Hauptsturmführer Dr Werner Heyde (complicit in the euthanasia program). Three ink stamps, SS-Hauptamtes (SS Main Office), San-Abt SS-TV (Medical Office for Concentration Camps), SS-Verw.Amt=SS (SS Administration Offices of the SS). Good bold Pohl signature in black indelible pencil (often used by Pohl).

Condition report: Two files holes. Couple of rust stains from staples. Otherwise clean.  Free from fading.

Background to Pohl: Oswald Ludwig Pohl born 30 June 1892 – died 7 June 195. Pohl became the head of the SS Main Economic and Administrative Office. As such he was also the head administrator of the Nazi concentration camps. Pohl was a key figure in the Final Solution, the extermination of Jews. After the war he went into hiding. Pohl was apprehended in 1946. He stood trial in 1947, was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Pohl was executed by hanging in 1951.

Background to Dr.Werner Heyde: Werner Heyde (aka Fritz Sawade) born 25 April 1902 – died 13 February 1964. Heyde was a German psychiatrist, and becam one of the main organizers of Nazi Germany's T-4 Euthanasia Program.

After World War II, Heyde was interned and imprisoned, but escaped in 1947. He went underground using the alias Fritz Sawade and continued practicing as a sports physician and psychiatrist in Flensburg. Many friends and associates knew about his real identity, but remained silent.

Heyde's true identity was revealed in the course of a private quarrel, and on 11 November 1959 Heyde surrendered to police in Frankfurt after 13 years as a fugitive. On 13 February 1964, five days before his trial was to start, Heyde hanged himself at the prison in Butzbach.
