Brought back to America in 1945 as war booty.

The hunting knife remained in a trunk until sold by the family in 1979.


Hermann Göring hunting knife for sale. The Germanic hunting knife, dating to the middle 1800s thereabouts. The main hilt assembly with boars head. The  main obverse/reverse panels with raised, hunting motifs including guns, swords, foliage and hunting equipment. The hoof-shaped crossguard with a protective shell front. The polished steel blade is undecorated.

The scabbard with raised hunting motifs to the silvered top- and bottom mounts.  The central panel  covered in dark brown grained leather. The reverse to the scabbard mounts is plain, typical of this type of hunting knife (which is carried inserted between the body and belt). To the top of the scabbard an extra compartment complete with the skinning blade (still present).

Size approximately 32.0cm

Condition report: The knife in overall very good to excellent condition. The gilted hilt assembly, and silvered scabbard mounts showing wear to the highpoints. The blade showing some use, free from pitting or other damage. Otherwise the knife free from damage, and with just light age.

Provenance: Acquired by a US Army officer, serving with the 1st battn, 3rd Infantry Division. In a  letter dated 3.22.79, the officer confirms he acquired various objects from buildings on the Obersalzburg complex, when his unit entered on May 4th, 1945. The part-listing  includes, "An old boar head hunting knife, which I think came out of a building belonging to Hermann Göring." A copy of the letter is included with the sale.

Notes: In many cultures the wild boar symbolises courage, strength and ferocity. 

Notes: Hermann Göring collected all manner of antique hunting knives, and by 1945 had amassed a significant collection.
