'For conspicuous gallantry in action.
He displayed great courage and determination during
the consilidation of the position, and by skilful handling
of his guns was instrumental in repelling
two counter-attacks.'

Background to Codd's military career: Codd was most likely a pre-war Territorial, leaving for France in late December 1914 with the 28th London Regiment (Artist Rifles). He was commissioned to the Durham Light Infantry in October 1915, becoming a machine gun officer. Codd was later transferred to the newly-formed Machine Gun Corps.

Codd was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry during the fighting at Schwaben Redoubt, (a German strong-point renowned for  its use of tanks, and  proximity to the village- and action of Thiepval, notable for the Victoria Cross awarded to Private Frederick Edwards, Middlesex Regiment, and Memoral to the Missing of the Somme, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens).

Additional notes: The Military Cross with exceptional contemporary engraving, recording the date and location of the action.
