Wounded Aboard HMS Glamorgan

 Falkland's South Atlantic Medal with Rosette award to a Marine Engineer Mechanic & Firefighter aboard HMS Glamorgan. The South Atlantic Medal with Rosette complete with box of issue, envelope for the medal, and additional envelope with extra rosettes. The medal impressed,' MEM (M)2 C MITCHELL D181551S HMS GLAMORGAN'. The medal with South Atlantic ribbon bearing Rosette. The box with typed details to the lid. One envelope for the medal, and one envelope with red designation, 'ROSETTES', and with three Rosettes present.

Condition report: The medal in excellent to near mint condition. Box in very good overall condition.

Background to Marine Mechanic Engineer & Firefighter C.Mitchell: Mitchell joined the Royal Navy straight from education at Torpoint on 27th November 1979. Mitchell served on various ships until he was transferred to HMS Glamorgan as a trainee Marine Engineer Mechanic & Firefighter.

Background to HMS Glamorgan & her Falklands involvement: HMS Glamorgan took part in many actions during the Flaklands conflict, including the bombing of Port Stanly on a number of occasions, Pebble Island in support of the S.A.S Ashore destroying 14 aircraft Berthasb Beach, Berkely Sound, support for HMS Ambuscade on 11th June.

At 17.00 hours on 11th June, HMS Glamorgan was detched at 26 knots to support 45 RM Cdo on two Sisters.

The following day (12th June) at 06.37, the HMS Glamorgan was hit by an Exocet missile. A serious hole was blown in the deck and outside hanger, with the aircraft and Port Seacat destroyed. The hanger and main gallery was burnt out and there was serious flooding in the Magazine and other compartments below. In total 13 men were left dead, and 14 wounded. The casualties were evacuated to HMS Hermes and HMS Invisible. Finally by 10.00 all the fires had been extinguished and the ship was once again on the move at 20 knots. Mitchell had been involved from the outset in helping to extinguish the various fires aboard the ship, and received burns during the process. Mitchell was discharged from the Royal navy on 1st November 1982.

Additional notes: The boxed medal sold with a printed photograph of himself in RN uniform, copies of BF ID card, Certificate of Discharge, history sheet for Marine Engineers, record of employment and certificates of qualifications. Additionally a page from a Morton & Eden Catalogue showing another South Atlantic Medal which was sold by the family of a crew member of HMS Glamorgan.
