Submariner in first submarine to submarine engagement ever

Submariner 1915 Star & Plaque | Killed In Action

At the start of the First World War, the Royal Navy launched their first best of type E-Class submarines. HMS E3 was the third such submarine to be constructed, and was the first submarine ever to engage in submarine against submarine conflict, when she engaged the German U-27 in October 1914. The U-27 managed to fire her torpedoes straight at HMS E3, destroying her instantly with the entire crew aboard.

1914/15 Star & Memorial plaque awarded posthumously to K8664 Stoker 1st Class William Beal, Royal Navy. Killed in action on 18th October 1914 when the HMS E3 was destroyed by the U-27. Beal is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
