Beautiful Condition
Of all the SS 1933 pattern service daggers availbale to collectors, a few are 'stand out' pieces for rarity condition and provenance. This is one of those 'stand out' pieces.
The SS 1933 pattern service dagger manufactured by the particularly rare to find firm of, Klittermann & Moog, Solingen. This example being an early full trademark version. The dagger with a black ebony grip, with inset nickel-silver eagle/swastika, and enamel SS Runes eye. Nickle-silver upper and lower mounts. The lower mount with the gruppe mark 'I', and the engraved SS membership number '15 137' for SS-Scharfuhrer Alfred Streich (with the 10th SS-Motor-Standarte).
The blade with motto bearing the rarely found exclamation mark. The reverse with the full Klittermannn & Moog name and logo. The scabbard with mounts in nickel-silver. The scabbard shell in typical black anodised finish. The dagger complete with its black leather hanging strap with spring clip.
Condition report: The dagger surviving in very good towards excellent condition, with a stunning condition blade. The ebony grip clean and free from major damage. The nickel-silver and black enamel Runes eye perfect. The nickel-silver eagle/swastika clear and well defined. The ebony grip fitting beautifully to the upper and lower crossguards, free from any major contraction. A clean screw top, indicating, perhaps, that the dagger has not been disassembled in recent times, or if so, then very carefully.
Blade in excellent towards near mint condition with most crossgrain still visible (99%), just typical runner marks evident. The motto remaining particularly clear and sharp. The Klittermann & Moog name and logo also remaining clear and sharp.
Scabbard clean, and free from dents or damage. The black anodised finish to the scabbard original to the dagger, and with approximately 99% remaining (lacquer finish typically gone). Nickle-silver upper and lower scabbard mounts excellent. Bottom ball free from any major dents or damage. All screws present and looking unmolested. Excellent dagger to scabbard fit. Leather hanger generally supple. The spring clip functioning.
Provenance: Ex-USA-based David Hohaus Collection. One collection from the earlier 2000s. The dagger photographed and described within Thomas Wittmann's publication, Exploring The Dress Daggers & Swords Of The German SS. Photographed and described on page 28, 681, and 682. Wittmann gives us his opinion of this dagger within the publication description, "One of the most remarkable pieces this writer has seen". Included in the sale of the dagger is a full research file on SS-Scharfuhrer Alfred Streich.
