Extreme rarity & perfect provenance - Does it get better

 

SA presentation dagger awarded by SA-Gruppenführer Knickmann on the occasion of the opening of the 'Adolf Hitler Bridge' over the Rhein River at Krefeld. At the request of Knickmann, two examples were produced by the prestigious maker, Eickhorn, to be awarded to his favoured comrades that attended the important event.

 Early Eickhorn manufactured dagger dating to 1936. The dagger with a fine fruit wood grip with inset nickel-silver SA Runes eye, and eagle/swastika. The dagger with solid nickel-silver mounts throughout.

The blade obverse with the rare to find small font SA motto, "Alles für Deutschland" Additionally, the 1935-41 Eickhorn trademark is etched on the obverse blade ricasso. This was done to save room on the reverse blade for the extensive dedication. The reverse blade is etched with the dedication,

"Mit diesem Dolch aus Krefelder Edelstahl durchschnitt der/ Stellvertreter des Führers, Pg. Reichsminister Rudolf Hess,/ anlässlich der/ Verkehrsübergabe Der Adolf Hitler Rheinbrüke in Krefeld-Uerdingen/ am 7. Juni 1936 das Sperrband".

Translation: With this Dagger made from high quality Krefeld steel / The representative of the Führer, PG (Parteigenosse) Reichsminister Rudolf Hess celebrates the opening of the Adolf Hitler Rhein Bridge in Krefeld-Uerdingen on 7 June 1936.

The reverse ricasso is etched in three lines, "Zweitanfertigung/für Gruppenführer/ Knickmann" (This dagger is one of two produced for Gruppenführer Knickmann). The dagger is complete with a standard SA scabbard, along with SA leather hanger.

Condition report: The dagger surviving in overall excellent towards near mint condition. The wood grip free from any major cracks or other damage. The SA Runes disc with perfect enamel. Top tang nut tight, and just faint signs of having been opened (it is known that Knapp (owner of the dagger 1970s – 2000s) had opened the dagger to have the dagger displayed with the inscription to the obverse. The blade with a good clean polished appearance and free from any major pitting or other damage.  The scabbard shell with 95% of its brown finish, and close to 80% of its original lacquer coat. The bottom ball has a couple of very small dings on its base. All screws present and remaining unmolested. The leather hanger supple.

Provenance: Richard E Knapp collection 1970s – 2000s. The dagger is featured in Johnson's Volume 6, Page 265. Volume 7, Pages 87-89 and Volume 8, Pages 133 and 134. Sold by Tom Wittmann of Wittmann’s Antique Militaria in 2014, one collection since being consigned to ULRIC of ENGLAND.
