Severely wounded & commited suicide in 1918

 

Medal trio with 1914 Star (Aug-Nov 1914 Bar), War Medal & Victory Medal. The three medals to H.A.McDonald14/Lond.Regt. Further items include a period photograph of McDonald in uniform, a London-Scottish cap badge, and a 14 County of London shoulder devise.

Condition report: The medals with original silk ribbons. The medals clean and in overall excellent condition free from dents or damage. Likewise the badges in clean condition. The photograph removed from an album but remaining clean and free from creases.

Background to McDonald: Born in Dundee in 1886 and later joined the Royal Bank of Scotland in Dundee. After thirteen years in the Dundee branch, McDonald moved to the bank’s London branch. On 25th May 1914 McDonald joined the army as a private, being assigned to the 1/14 battalion (London Scottish) The London Regiment. On 31 October, McDonald was severely wounded in the neck at the Battle of Messines in France. After recovering from his wounds, McDonald was commissioned into the Army Cyclist Corps with the rank of Captain. Apparently never getting over his wounds, McDonald shot himself in the head on 6th February 1918.

Included in the sale: various copies of documents relating to McDonald, including medal entitlement. A photograph of his grave.
