A true history inspiring Napoleonic period Military General Service Medal. The medal awarded to Lieutenant (later Captain) Edward Purvis, known by many as none other than the ‘Ghost of Watlington House’. The ghost of Edward Purvis apparently still inhabiting Watlington House to this day. Purvis fought with the 4th Foot Regt, and received both the Salamanca and Corunna clasps. This is a rare to find medal from the Napoleonic era, where we have a photograph of Purvis taken in his later years.

 

Military General Service Medal awarded to Lieutenant Edward Purvis, with two clasps for Salamanca, and Corunna. The medal impressed E.PURVIS, LIEUT. 4TH FOOT'. The medal complete with the correct ribbon, and a fine silver brooch suspender.

Condition report: The medal surviving in overall very good towards excellent condition with all detail to the obverse & reverse clear and crisp. The impressed naming clear and sharp. The medal free from any major edge knocks or other damage. The long original silk ribbon showing some age and light use overall. The look of the ribbon and medal shows that Purvis actually wore his medal after reciept. Pleasant age darkening overall to both medal disc, and clasps, along with top suspender.

Additional notes: Sold with a copy of the photograph with Purvis sitting in his chair. The original still held at Watlington House. Also copies of of an article about Edward Purvis.
