Stunning Kaisermarine Ivory Grip Mess Dagger by Eickhorn

Hand crafted and sold on special order 

 

Kaisermarine mess dirk reference 328 by Eickhorn with cut out imperial crown pommel, and white ivory grip with brass banding. Typical bottom crossguard with anchor centers within cartouche, and circular shield style ends. The blade with double etched blade bearing sailing ships and imperial crowns with anchors. The blade bearing the double squirrel manufacture stamp of August Luneburg. The highly decorative scabbard with fully engraved rings and scallop shell bands.  The scabbard shell deeply engraved with leaves and floral patterns. A bench number '3' stamped to the base of the scabbard. The dirk complete with an original Kaisermarine portoppe in old silver, and with black & red flecking. Size Crown top to scabbard base 35.5 cm.

Condition report: The grip in close to perfect condition free from splits or damage. The blade with fine polished steel finish intact. Etched panels clear andd bright. The entire blade free from pitting or damage. Tip perfect. Press release functioning cleanly, and a red flet buffer in place. The scabbard clean and free from any dents. The original  mercuric gilting largely  gone. The portepee darkened with age, a small mark to one side. Free from fraying.

Provenance: Acquired for the Clayton German Naval Collection in the late 1970s. The dagger purchased from a Norfolk-based house clearance sale ( no invoice supplied). Photocopies of the relevant pages from the original August Luneburg catalogue, showing the reference 328 mess dirk included in the sale. Additionally included in the sale a 1991 USA-based Max show promotion leaflet with a photograph of this actual mess dirk.

Notes: The Kaisermarine officers mess dirk refernce 328 is one of a number of versions availbale from the house of August Luneburg. They were on special order, largely hand crafted, and as such only minute quantities were ever made. Today are incredibly rare  to find in collections or the market place.
