The birthplace of the Knight's Cross


Cased Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for sale. The classic, ‘4’ Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, made by Steinhauer & Lück, and one of the official awarded pieces. This example being the Type-B '935' silver version. The Knights Cross with typical magnetic core, and frosted beading. The Knight's Cross stamped both with the '935' silver content, and the maker code number '4', to the top rim of the reverse side. The silver loop also marked '935'.

The Knight's Cross contained within a standard black Knight's Cross case with white satin roof, and black velvet fitted base.

Condition report: The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, in overall excellent towards near mint condition. The Cross with much frosting remaining, and with some age darkening to the polished silver rim. The black finished centre in clean condition, free from any paint loss, or other damages.

The ribbon to this award is missing, and the family have not managed to find the ribbon to date. Therefore we are selling the Knight's Cross without a ribbon. Please note we have an original example of Knight's Cross ribbon from the Collection Lionello (see item g008722).

Notes: Instituted on 1st September 1939, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to members of the German Army & Waffen-SS for continuous acts of extreme bravery and/or outstanding leadership.

Knight's Cross conferred to the Luftwaffe were typically issued on a points system, based on the number of enemy aircraft destroyed, comparatively, in the German Navy, the decoration was generally conferred based on the amount (weight) of tonnage destroyed. 

In excess of 6,000 awards of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross were conferred between 1939-1945. Today, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross is considered one of the most iconic - and desirable, WW2 German decorations.
