Background to August Frank: Born 5 April 1898 Died 21 March 1984. Frank joined the SS as a private on 1 May 1932, and the Nazi Party on 1 January 1933. From 1933 to 1935, Frank undertook minor administrative duties at the Dachau concentration camp.

In 1935, at the request of Oswald Pohl, Frank became SS Administrative Officer of the Special Purpose Troops (SS-Verfügungstruppe) and of the concentration camp guards, the SS Death's Head units (SS-Totenkopfverbände), although the presence of a bureaucratic rival somewhat limited his authority in the second capacity. In February 1940, Frank became chief supply officer of the Waffen SS and Death's Head units under Pohl.

Frank became an important part of the SS Main Economic and Administrative Office (WVHA). Apart of his responsibility, among other things, was the administration of the Nazi concentration camps. After the war, all the higher WVHA officials, including Frank, were tried and convicted of crimes against humanity. Frank received a prison sentence and was released in 1960.

Provenance: Former SS general August Frank, was contacted by former American soldier, and military collector, William McClure, in 1972. A relationship developed by letter writing, which eventually led Frank to sell his medal group and other items to McClure. McClure kept these items in his collection until 1984 and then sold them to fellow collector Mel Smith. ULRIC of ENGLAND purchased the group in 1992 from Mel Smith, and sold them in 1999. The medal group has been in one collection until being consigned into ULRIC of ENGLAND. The August Frank medal group is shown in German Insignia of World War II page 97. Inside The Allgemeine SS 1923 - 1945 page 280.
