The Art of Collecting

Beautifully-Crafted, Elusive Pieces With Provenance

The Silver Party Badge showcased for sale  this month is one of several star-quality German awards recently consigned from a  small- albeit carefully curated- German medal collection. Other star pieces include a Waffen-SS Hauptsturmführer White Summer Tunic, and a Deputy Reichsleiter overcoat.

Jewel-like Silver Party Badges were conferred personally by Hitler to just a handful of 'like-minded' statesmen. In additon to being one of the most elusive Third Reich awards, Silver Party Badges demonstrate the ancient, plique-a-jour enamelling technique, employed on premium-quality jewelry and small decorative objects: think Faberge and Lalique.

The Silver Party Badge for sale has an impeccable pedigree: it was most-likely conferred to Hungarian statesman Admiral Horthy, thereafter it was acquired by Collector-Colonel Dodkins [1945]. Auctioneers Wallis & Wallis represented the badge for sale  [lot 99], in a single-owner auction titled the 'Dodkins Collection.' [1987].

The Waffen-SS Hauptsturmführer White Summer Tunic, was recently consigned by a European collector: the tunic is one of several SS-related 'fresh-to-market' pieces from the collection. The detachable tunic-insignia includes the sleeve eagle & swastika. Waffen-SS White Summer tunics were worn in the Italian theatre of war.

Formerly owned by Chris Farlowe [Out-of-Time, The Art of Chris Farlowe, November 1966], the  Deputy Reichsleiter overcoat, combines a '60s rock note with raft of 'must-have' ingredients: top-tier political rank, premium-quality cloth, exemplary tailoring, Berlin tailors label, great condition and much more. The overcoat would complement a specialised collection, or serve as a stand-alone 'masterpiece.'
